When it comes to getting your teeth whitened by a professional, bleaching is the most common method. It is a relatively easy procedure that does not involve any pain. After first putting up a protective barrier on your gums, we will have you bite down onto a specially made tray which contains the bleaching ingredients. This tray looks and is fitted much like a mouthguard or the tray you use to get a fluoride treatment when you come in for your regular cleaning.
The ingredients in the tray are typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which helps break down any stains on your teeth and lighten its color. For some treatments, a special light will be used to help activate the ingredients in the tray or a dental laser may be utilized. You can expect to hold the tray in your mouth for between 30 to 60 minutes. After you are done with the tray, we will clean off your teeth and apply a fluoride treatment if necessary.
Following the procedure, we will examine the color of your teeth and determine if any future treatment sessions are necessary. It is important to consult with us about any teeth whitening methods you are using at home as well before you start a professional treatment.
Overuse of whiteners can damage the enamel in your teeth and wear down your gums. That is why it is important to closely follow our instructions and not try to add any home treatments to what is being done professionally.
What Causes Tooth Discoloration
How do you keep your teeth white after getting them professionally whitened and cleaned? By avoiding what discolored them in the first place. Your teeth can get discolored for many different reasons. The most common is not keeping good dental hygiene habits up at home. That means if you want to keep your teeth white, you have to brush and floss them regularly.
Another major cause of tooth discoloration is tobacco use. Both smoking and chewing tobacco can yellow or darken the color of your teeth. Your diet also plays a role as certain types of coffees, soft drinks, wines, and other alcoholic beverages can have an impact on the color of your smile. Tooth discoloration can also be caused by disease, or disease treatment methods such as chemotherapy, advancing age, genetics, and even your environment. Make sure you share your complete medical and family history with us when you are discussing teeth whitening procedures.
