What Is a Dental Implant?A dental implant is a man-made synthetic structure that can be placed in the jaw where the roots of a tooth would ordinarily go to remedy a missing or extracted tooth. These are important because gaps could result in shifting or crowding teeth, or damage to the gums in that area resulting in discomfort or difficulty eating or speaking. These implants are set into the jaw and often used to hold false teeth or other dental structures in place to enhance your smile or help your experience when chewing.
Can I Get One?While many people can get dental implants, not everyone can. If you have a poor bone density or a weak immune system, there is a good chance that your body could reject the implant. Also, if you have poor oral hygiene, you may be denied as it could lead to infection and pain, discomfort, or inflammation.
How Do I Get One?If we deem you a good candidate and you have a need, then the implant is inserted through a surgical procedure. You are administered anesthesia, and the implant is inserted into your jaw. A metal post is often connected then to anchor a false tooth to fill in the gap. After the procedure is finished, you will likely be given antibiotics to keep your mouth healthy in the span following its completion, as any open wound holds the potential for infection. With good care, your new tooth and implant can last ten to fifteen years, but that is only if you take proper care of not only that tooth but the rest of your mouth as well.
If you need to have a tooth removed, or already have a gap that needs repair, Everwell Dentistry can help you get your confidence back as your functionality, as well as your mouth, moves toward a solid equilibrium once more. While not everyone can get an implant, don't automatically exclude yourself. |
