Restorative dentistry plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving oral health by repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth. Whether due to decay, trauma, or wear, restorative procedures aim to restore the function, aesthetics, and overall health of your smile.

Everwell Dentistry offers various restorative dental treatments, including dental crowns, dental bridges, tooth fillings, dentures, root canals, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) treatment. Understanding these options can help you make informed decisions about your dental care.

Understanding Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry focuses on diagnosing and treating dental issues that affect the structure and function of the teeth and surrounding tissues. It encompasses a wide range of procedures designed to restore the health and appearance of your smile. The primary goals of restorative dentistry include:
•  Restoring the function of damaged or missing teeth
•  Improving the aesthetics of your smile
•  Preventing further dental issues
•  Enhancing overall oral health

Whether you've suffered an injury, experienced tooth decay, or lost teeth due to gum disease, restorative dentistry offers a range of solutions tailored to your unique needs.

Common Restorative Procedures

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are one of the most common restorative procedures. Dental crowns are custom-made caps that cover the entire tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are often used to improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth and to restore a severely decayed or fractured tooth. Crowns are also used after a root canal treatment to protect the tooth, or placed atop a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two visits. During the first visit, Dr. Embree will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to fit the crown. We will take an impression of the tooth to create a custom crown and place a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready. At the second visit, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented in place.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between adjacent teeth. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) supported by crowns on either side. This restoration helps restore chewing function, improve aesthetics, and prevent neighboring teeth from shifting.

The process for getting a dental bridge is similar to that of a crown. We will prepare the supporting teeth by placing crowns on them, take impressions, and then create a custom bridge. The bridge is then cemented in place, providing a stable and functional solution for missing teeth.

Tooth Fillings

Tooth fillings are used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. When a cavity is detected, we will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the space with a material that matches the tooth's color. Common filling materials include composite resin, amalgam, and glass ionomer.

The filling process is straightforward and typically completed in one visit. After numbing the area, we will clean out the decay and fill the cavity, restoring the tooth's function and preventing further decay.

Dentures

Dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing teeth. We offer both full dentures (replacing all teeth in an arch) and partial dentures (replacing a few missing teeth). Dentures help restore the ability to eat and speak while improving facial aesthetics.

Getting dentures involves several steps, including taking impressions of your mouth, creating a custom fit, and making adjustments for comfort. While dentures may take some time to get used to, they can significantly enhance your quality of life.

Root Canals

A root canal is a procedure used to treat infected or inflamed pulp inside a tooth. When decay reaches the pulp, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess if left untreated. Root canal therapy aims to remove the infected tissue, clean the root canals, and seal the tooth to prevent further infection.

The process typically involves:
•  Numbing the Tooth: Local anesthesia is administered to minimize discomfort.
•  Accessing the Pulp: Dr. Embree drills an opening in the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
•  Removing Infected Tissue: The infected pulp is carefully removed.
•  Cleaning and Disinfecting: The root canals are cleaned and disinfected to eliminate bacteria.
•  Filling the Tooth: The tooth is filled with a biocompatible material and sealed.
•  Restoration: A crown or filling is placed to restore the tooth's function.

Root canal therapy can save a tooth and relieve pain, allowing you to keep your natural teeth for years to come.

TMJ Treatment

TMJ treatment addresses issues related to the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. TMJ disorders can cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty in chewing or speaking. Treatment options may include:
•  Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen jaw muscles and improve mobility.
•  Occlusal Splints: Custom-made mouthguards to relieve pressure on the jaw joint.
•  Medications: Anti-inflammatory medications or muscle relaxants to alleviate pain and discomfort.
•  Surgical Options: In severe cases, patients may need surgical intervention to correct structural issues.

Addressing TMJ disorders is crucial not only for comfort but also for preventing long-term damage to the teeth and jaw.

Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can arise unexpectedly, and knowing when to seek emergency dental care is crucial. Common situations that require immediate attention include:
•  Severe tooth pain that over-the-counter pain relievers can't handle
•  A knocked-out tooth
•  A cracked or fractured tooth
•  Signs of infection, such as swelling or pus
•  Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth

In the event of a dental emergency, contact our office immediately. Prompt treatment is essential to alleviate pain, prevent complications, and save damaged teeth.
