Smiling kids after visiting their Ann Arbor dentist for a Dental Emergency at Everwell Dentistry. As a parent, your worst fear is likely something bad happening to your child. Whether it is an accident or even a bad day, we want them happy and healthy as often as we can make that happen. Here at Everwell Dentistry, we understand that those bad days will happen. That is why we are here to help with any dental emergency that your child faces. We don’t want them in pain any more than you do, so we offer several ways to keep them at their best. The most important thing that we can remind you as a parent is to stay calm. Let us handle the technical side; you just need to be there for your son or daughter.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

When many people think of emergencies, their mind instinctively goes to the emergency room. However, there are times than a dental office may be better equipped to deal with a problem. With kids, in particular, their potential for wild and unpredictable behavior can leave them particularly susceptible to dental trauma and other dental related problems. A dental emergency can include a wide range of issues.

The first and potentially most scary for an adult would have to be lost, broken, or damaged teeth. These can come from any number of accidents and as a parent, it is easy to become alarmed and unsure about what steps to take next. Other problems can include cuts or bites on the inside of your child’s cheeks, lips, or tongue that may not stop bleeding within 15 minutes or so, which can indicate further problems. If your son or daughter has had dental work in the past, they may have lost a filling or a crown, meaning they are in pain or are having difficulties eating or speaking. Finally, a child could be suffering from a serious infection within their teeth or gums. Any or all of these warrant a trip to our office as quickly as possible.

What to Do if Your Child Has an Emergency

If you are having a dental emergency of any kind, the first and most important step is to stay as calm as you can. From there, call our office immediately. If we cannot make an appointment right away, we may recommend you go to an emergency room. However, if you can come in, we want you to, so we will work around our schedule to accommodate you. Another important step is determining short- term solutions for the pain. For example, bleeding can be controlled with gauze until your child can make it into our office. If your child has had a tooth knocked out, be sure to store it in a small cup containing their saliva or milk. This will keep it moist enough that we may be able to replant it.

If you have a dental emergency, Everwell Dentistry wants to help. We know how nerve-wracking it can be and will do everything in our power to help your little one get on the road to recovery in no time. Give us a call as soon as you can after determining the nature of the problem, and we can further guide you from there.
The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
