Dental Dietary Counseling Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor dentist offering dietary counseling at Everwell Dentistry. It seems like these days there are diets for everything. At Everwell Dentistry in Ann Arbor, MI we’re not interested in fads or drastic changes, we just want you, and your teeth, to be the healthiest they can be. Our dietary counseling focuses only on reducing oral health risks from your diet and promoting good nutrition for your health. Counseling can be as simple as a quick chat, or it could be a little more involved depending on the situation. The goal is always the same: healthy, beautiful smiles for a lifetime.

What is Dental Dietary Counseling?

Dental Dietary Counseling is an important part of preventative dental care. Whether in an adult or a younger patient, if we notice a trend of cavities or tooth decay, we’ll likely initiate dental dietary counseling. We may ask you to recount what you typically eat in a day, or perhaps keep a food journal for a week and connect with us again to talk over possible adjustments. The purpose of these exercises is never to judge, but always to help. Our suggestions are usually simple, straightforward, and easy to implement. For some patients, it's as simple as limiting snacks or switching out sugary snacks for healthier alternatives. Small adjustments between dental appointments are often very effective, and we love to see our patients’ oral health improve.

Dental Dietary Counseling for Kids

At the end of every check-up with one of our young patients, we’ll take time to meet with parents and discuss the results of the exam. We’ll let you know how your child’s overall oral health is looking and may include some dental dietary counseling. We know kids can be fussy eaters and this counseling isn’t meant to upend your routine. Depending on the state of your child’s oral health, we may offer suggestions for snack time alternatives, prescribe brushing and flossing techniques tailored to the child’s age and abilities or share more specific adjustments.

Tips for a Healthy Diet

There are a few simple changes that you can make to your diet right now for your oral health. Foods high in sugars, carbs, and starches greatly contribute to the production of plaque and acids that attack your tooth enamel. Eventually, the enamel may break down and form a cavity. Sugar specifically can have a big impact on a child’s developing teeth. If you’re craving something sweet, we suggest you opt for a healthier option like fruit. Sweet treats are best consumed after a meal when your mouth is already producing much saliva which can help wash it away. Drink lots of water and try to get in the habit of brushing your teeth after meals. As always, be sure to come in for your professional cleaning every six months so we can keep an eye on your progress and celebrate your healthy smile!

If you think you or your family could benefit from dental dietary counseling, don’t hesitate to call us at (734) 973-0000 so we can schedule your appointment today!
