What Can Be Done to Avoid Bruxism?

What Can Be Done to Avoid Bruxism? If you have never heard the word bruxism, it sounds like something you would have if you were having problems with brushing your teeth. However, bruxism has nothing to do with brushing, and everything to do with grinding or clenching of your teeth at night.

While tooth clenching doesn't seem at first like a big deal, bruxism and teeth clenching can lead to tooth pain, chipped, split or cracked teeth, and even tooth loss. So, what can be done to avoid bruxism? We have some suggestions.

Natural Remedies for Bruxism

First, you may want to try relaxation techniques to avoid stress before you go to bed. If you are able to relax, your jaw muscles may relax too, which means that you may not grind or clench your teeth. Researchers have also found that adding more magnesium into your diet helps muscles relax, which also helps you not to grind or clench your teeth at night.

You may also want to consider a dental appliance to help with grinding or clenching your teeth. Dental appliances move your jaws into natural alignments, and also keep you from clenching or grinding your teeth. In the past, dental appliances or guards were bulky and cumbersome.

However, now they are lightweight and flexible, and can easily be slipped into your mouth before you go to bed. Best of all, you will not have the side effects of bruxism: tooth pain and sensitivity, cracked teeth, or broken teeth. Neck pain and headaches are also common with bruxism.

In the past, mouth guards were also very expensive. However, the price for a mouth guard has decreased over time. Also, wearing a mouth guard is much cheaper than having additional dental work done because of cracked or broken teeth.
