How Tooth Erosion Gets Treated

When the term erosion is used in regards to the teeth, it refers to wearing away of the enamel. The enamel is the outer protective layer of the teeth, and it is one of the hardest substances in the body. Still, the enamel can be damaged by decay and other issues, and when it occurs, it is important to treat the problem right away.

Can the Enamel Regenerate?

While enamel is very tough, it doesn't contain living cells. This means that it can't grow back and repair itself if it suffers chemical or physical changes. This means tooth erosion can't be reversed, and the enamel cannot grow back. Fortunately, the process takes a while, so if your enamel erosion is minimal you can take steps to prevent it from worsening.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

Although your enamel can't be replaced, we offer a couple of ways to repair the worn down mineral. The two most common include:

•	Crowns. For teeth with serious cases of weakened enamel, a crown can help. This cap protects the damaged area of the tooth, restoring structure and function. You'll be protected against future decay and can eat and drink pain-free.
•	Bonding. For milder cases of erosion, tooth bonding may be recommended. This is more of a cosmetic procedure, and resin is applied to the damaged teeth. Once hardened, the enamel bonds to the teeth before being trimmed and polished. Since the resin is selected to match the color of your natural teeth, you shouldn't be able to tell that you've had any work done.
