Things We Consider Actual Dental Emergencies

Things We Consider Actual Dental EmergenciesMany people find themselves wondering what actually constitutes a true dental emergency. This is because you don't want to call something an emergency unless it really is one.

After all, there's no need to squeeze something more into your schedule or make yourself feel anxious if you don't need to.

What Constitutes a 'True' Dental Emergency

When you have a dental emergency, you should call us and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. This may be due to you losing a tooth as an adult – either from an accident or an infection. Sometimes we can reattach this tooth if we see you right away.

Cracking or chipping a tooth can happen simply when you eat something. We can restore your tooth and prevent bacteria from entering it if we see you right away. This will prevent infection and the need for a root canal.

A severe toothache, especially in the case of a dental abscess that is disbursing pus in your mouth is also a true emergency. This can infect the rest of your mouth and would require it to be treated with antibiotics right away. You never want to treat this pain yourself, especially not with aspirin.

What is NOT a Dental Emergency

Things like teeth cleaning, bad breath, temporarily irritated gums, and sensitive teeth should never be seen as a dental emergency. This doesn't mean they aren't legitimate oral health concerns though.

It simply means that you should schedule a regular appointment during which time we can address these issues with you – even if it takes a few weeks for us to be able to do so. On the other hand, if you truly have a dental emergency, make sure you tell us this so that we can give you the urgent care you need. In either case, we look forward to helping you maintain your good oral hygiene.
The first step to a healthy beautiful smile is to schedule an appointment.
